Lisa Spencer
Lisa Spencer is an award-winning children's author, veteran broadcast meteorologist, and one of Tennessee's most recognizable science communicators. After a distinguished 42-year broadcasting career—including 25 years as Chief Meteorologist at WSMV-TV in Nashville—Lisa recently retired from her daily on-air responsibilities to devote more time to writing, visiting schools, and inspiring the next generation of readers, scientists, and weather enthusiasts.
For more than four decades, Lisa combined her passion for weather with a love of teaching. She has visited hundreds of schools throughout Tennessee, engaging thousands of students with interactive presentations that make weather and science exciting, understandable, and fun. Teachers appreciate her ability to turn complex scientific concepts into memorable, hands-on learning experiences that spark curiosity long after the visit ends.
Lisa is the author of several children's books that encourage a love of science and reading. Her nonfiction titles, How Do Meteorologists Predict the Future? and How Do Hurricanes Have an Eye: A Book About Natural Disasters Happen?, introduce young readers to Earth science through engaging explanations and colorful illustrations. She is also the creator of The Wonder Dogs series, which combines adventure, weather, and lovable rescue dogs to teach important weather safety lessons through storytelling. The first book in the series, The Wonder Dogs: Caught in a Thunderstorm, features Lisa's own rescue dogs as the stars, with more Wonder Dogs adventures already in development.
In addition to writing books, Lisa has produced educational weather and science videos for children, families, and classrooms, and she has been an invited speaker for the Tennessee Association of School Librarians. She enjoys partnering with schools, libraries, literacy organizations, and STEM programs to inspire children to read, ask questions, and discover the wonders of science.
Lisa is a 12-time Regional Emmy Award winner and has been named Tennessee's Best Weather Anchor five times by the Tennessee Associated Press. She holds the prestigious Certified Broadcast Meteorologist designation from the American Meteorological Society and has earned the National Weather Association Seal of Approval. She also serves on the Board of Directors for Book'em, a nonprofit dedicated to putting books into the hands of children throughout Middle Tennessee.
Lisa lives in Middle Tennessee with her husband, Brady. They have two grown children, Nick and Ali, and two beloved rescue dogs, Lyla and Lilly Belle, who continue to inspire new Wonder Dogs adventures.
